Jon’s black and white photo art is technically created by employing the timeless yet rapidly disappearing quality of traditional black and white film based photography. Printed by hand on rich toned archival fiber based papers.
His favorite camera is an antique medium format twin lens reflex camera dating back to the late 1930's. He also uses a 4x5 inch view camera, and digital cameras.
His color photography is produced using digital photography which has been manipulated for style and dynamic color using Photoshop software. These images typically become digitally assisted Polaroid image transfers. The images frequently include subject matter that is faster moving or is more well suited to a color rendition than the black and white work, but originates from the same theme and approach overall.
Jon is an Arizona native growing up in Tempe and currently residing in Fountain Hills. He has been working as a photographer and photographic educator at the secondary and post secondary level for 15 plus years. He currently teaches his award winning photography students at Mountain View High School in Mesa. He holds both a BS degree in Photography and a Masters of Education from Northern Arizona University.
Jon’s work illustrates his strong connection to the geography of the Southwest. He seeks to capture this natural world from a uniquely romantic perspective. The images are intended to express the power and boldness of nature and light while at the same time conveying stability and calmness. He makes photographs that have strong roots in the traditions of the imagery of the region, but are at the same time new and contemporary. His images are typically set in Arizona or one of the four corners states.
