Hal Stewart - Artist

Sculptor

Hal Stewart is a construction worker turned artist! He was born and raised in southern Illinois, however, he has lived in Arizona for many years working primarily in the construction industry. He has raised and successfully shown Appaloosas, Quarter, and Saddle bred horses.

For many years he owned and operated a small ranch in southeastern Arizona, raising alfalfa hay and a few head of cattle. During this time Hal became very much aware of the Native American Indian culture when he started riding in parades dressed in an authentic Nez Perce Indian Chief outfit.

In 2000 Hal completed his first sculpture called "Treaty Talker". Since, he has completed over 30 additional sculptures. His subject matter is varied – Native American Indians, cattle, trappers and mountain men, birds, cowboys, pioneers, animals, spiritual, and others. Hal spends much time researching his subject before beginning any sculpture. His extensive library of books, photos, and stories provide most of the authenticity needed. He has visited with the Blackfoot Indians in Montana, the Sioux in South Dakota and, living in Arizona, is exposed to the Native American Indian culture almost on a daily basis.

He regularly visits operating cattle ranches throughout the year for further authenticity.

Hal's art education consists of carefully selected courses at colleges, museums, and the Scottsdale Artists School. He has studied under Bruno Lucchesi, Richard Greeves, Tuck Langland, Wilfred Stedman, Walter Matai, John Coleman, Sandy Scott, and Betty Pat. Gatliff among others. For the summer of 2005, The Grand Canyon National Park selected Hal to be the Artist-In-Residence at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Today, one of his sculptures is a permanent part of the Artists of the Grand Canyon Collection.

For many years, one day per week, Hal volunteered as an art teacher at the Eagle Point Juvenile Correctional Facility in Buckeye, Arizona – his way of giving back to the community. For this volunteerism, Hal and three others were honored as the "2004 Teacher Team Arts Education Award" winner by the Arizona Alliance of Arts Education.

Today Hal Stewart makes his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. His sculptures can be found in galleries and private and corporate collections throughout the world.
