The Southwest is a never-ending source of excitement and ideas as Justine Mantor is continually challenged to find new methods to illustrate the mysterious and changing desert. "Varied colored clayboards provide exciting surfaces for experimentation. I texture the surfaces by etching through the colored surface to the white clay below to create rhythmic, linear effects. Using ink for painting, I have developed techniques that create layers of iridescent ink bubbling up through transparent colored inks that produce a shimmering, magical landscape: the desert alive with color and movement.
