Born in Chicago, Judi Yates began working in the arts and crafts in the late 60's where she began her studies at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She worked with clay and fiber primarily, but became proficient in many mediums, including jewelry and floral design. After moving to the Southwest she found her true passion in silver and stone work. Her jewelry draws inspiration from the subtleties of late Modernism and from the styles of culture indigenous to her home in the Southwest. When asked about the stylistic intentions that Judi has, she states:
"I am inspired to create works that are both culturally relevant, but are also imbued with the rare and sublime beauty found in nature." Judi starts with the raw stone, seeking to discover its unique features-the true spirit in the stone. Crystalline veins, fossilized bits echo the history of the earth in each piece. Working with minerals, semi precious gems, pearls and fossils she creates stunning contrasts of textured and sleek natural elements set in silver. No two pieces are quite the same. Some large and dramatic, some quietly elegant.
