CARRIE GODWIN

I am both a Precious Metal Clay artist and a watercolorist, drawn to materials and processes that allow for creativity, patience, and transformation. My journey with silver clay began when a jeweler invited me to take classes in New Mexico. Because my mother was a potter and I already loved clay, I said yes—and I was hooked. The organic versatility of the medium captured my imagination, and I went on to become a Certified Instructor. Alongside jewelry, watercolor painting has become another passion, connecting me back to my original background in photography and my fascination with color theory.

My silver jewelry is created from .999 fine recycled silver (not sterling) that is embedded into clay with a binder. Each piece is hand-formed, carved, and then fired in a kiln for two hours at 1650 degrees before being finished with sanding, polishing, and sometimes components like enameling or gemstones. I love that this medium allows me to combine precision with organic expression.

My watercolor paintings are built on surprise and softness. Working from my photos and visual memories, I begin with light washes and patiently build up layers of color to create transparency, depth, and movement. By paying close attention to how the paper dries, I add detail, revise, and refine until the painting reflects my vision.

I am inspired by process—the way silver transforms in fire, or how water and pigment merge in unexpected ways. My background in photography fuels my fascination with color theory, which ties both my jewelry and my painting together. Ultimately, I hope my work makes people feel a connection—whether to a memory, a sense of energy, or a quiet calm. That emotional bond is what drives me to keep creating.
