I often begin with a design concept, but the gourd itself frequently influences the final outcome. Its natural form inspires creative possibilities and guides many of my artistic decisions. Using carving, pyrography, weaving, and color, I strive to enhance the beauty that already exists within the gourd while preserving its natural character. My work reflects the partnership between artistic vision and the unique qualities of the material.

My primary inspiration comes from other artists working in a variety of mediums. Their creativity, craftsmanship, and approaches to artistic expression continually encourage me to explore new ideas and techniques in my own work.

I am also inspired by the members of the gourd associations to which I belong. Through workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, and the exchange of ideas, they challenge me to grow as an artist and expand my skills. Being part of a community of artists who are passionate about their craft creates an environment of constant learning and growth.

The annual Arizona Gourd Society competition provides additional motivation to refine my techniques and elevate the quality of my work. Preparing pieces for competition encourages me to focus on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and creative innovation.
