John Weecks

My journey in life began on an Austrian farm near the Slovenian border. At the age of seven, I was whisked away to Paris, a city filled with grand boulevards, palaces, museums, and historic relics. My daily exposure to some of the world’s greatest works of art helped me develop a lifelong love of painting, sculpture, and woodcarving.

I am a graduate of the Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut, where I was trained in the European classical tradition, specializing in book illustration, figure drawing, and painting.

Today, my name is synonymous with wood sculpture, and I have developed a national following for my popular nature series. My work is rooted in careful observation and a desire to capture the character and beauty of the natural world in wood.

When I begin a project, I might look for a perfect stance or a very special emotional moment that will most effectively describe the subject with which I am working. Through my sculptures, I strive to capture not only the physical qualities of my subjects, but also the feeling and spirit within them.

Nature is my greatest inspiration. In my nature carvings, I look for those special moments that give the viewer a window into the joys of the wondrous and beautiful world we all live in.

I want my wood sculptures to create an emotional connection to the natural world and to provide pleasure and comfort to those who view them. For me, the goal is to capture those fleeting moments of beauty and translate them into something lasting—an artwork that allows the viewer to experience a sense of wonder and connection.
