CHERYL PRATHER

I am a painter living in Fountain Hills, Arizona, and a native Arizonian who has spent most of my life here, along with 18 years in New Mexico. The Southwest, with its abundance of color and light, has always been my greatest influence. I am self-taught and became a full-time artist after taking early retirement. I am also an active member of the Fountain Hills Artists League, the Scottsdale Artists’ League, the American Women Artist organization, and the American Watercolor Society.

Watercolor is my medium of choice—hypnotic, addictive, and magical. I am captivated by its spontaneity and the way it transforms with every brushstroke. My paintings often begin with my first love, photography, as I use my photos as references in my studio and occasionally paint plein air. I create colorful, transparent works of desert landscapes, plants, buildings, and animals, often experimenting with textures to bring them to life.

I am inspired by the unique light, color, and energy of the Southwest. The landscapes of Arizona and New Mexico, with their endless variety of shapes and textures, provide me with an ever-changing source of ideas. Photography also inspires me, as I love transforming captured moments into expressive watercolor paintings. Ultimately, I find joy in exploring how color and spontaneity can capture the beauty I see all around me.
